ABOUT THE GRANT

Today information flows quickly, but is often caught in currents of bias or trapped in echo chambers. Expression happens instantly, but stories conflict and resolution can be difficult.  We envision a Future of Dialogue, in which discussion about where we’re headed is open to everyone. In 1971 Charles Eames said “Beyond the age of information is the age of choices.” Today we all share the weight of those choices, but our communities and our tools are being tested as to whether they’re capable.

This year the Seattle Design Foundation will be looking for future-minded project proposals by local creatives addressing ways and means to establish Future Dialogues. How can we could create deeper discussions around these topics that define our day to day lives?  How do we discuss the mechanisms that either enable or limit our opportunities to be happy, healthy, and fulfilled?  These deeper discussions likely require more attention, more effort, and more ways to understand people from different backgrounds or filter bubbles than we have today. How can we facilitate community over the long term?  How can we build dialog that last longer than one hype cycle? How can we set things in motion to give the next generation the tools and perspective for discussing our differences?

PURPOSE

The SDF grant program supports and promotes innovation in emerging talent by selecting individuals to receive small, project-focused grants matched with mentorship. We believe that a mentorship component allows for education beyond any given avenue of design, and allows for collaboration and networking between generations of Seattle’s creatives.

AMOUNT

Grants will be given to submitted projects that best address the theme and goals of the foundation. SDF will announce the grant winner at an event to take place at an event on November 16, 2017. The grand prize grant is for $2500 and will be selected by a jury panel to be announced in the coming weeks. The popular choice grant is for $500, and chosen by digital votes. SDF will work to align grantees with a mentor to help them through the creative process. The smaller grant model is meant not to support a lifestyle, but to give added momentum to an idea.
